BANGOR, Maine — Construction crews will tear down the Wendy’s on Union Street in Bangor later this month to make way for a modernized replacement.
Bill Lust, the fast food restaurant’s general manager, said the store will close Aug. 23. On Aug. 24, the restaurant will sell off its old equipment to any businesses, charities or churches in need of kitchen equipment, tables or other items.
The next day, work on the site is expected to begin.
“They’re going to tear it down to the basement and then clean it up and rebuild from scratch,” Lust said Friday.
The Union Street Wendy’s opened in 1977 and has seen few substantial overhauls. Lust said he hopes to reopen after about 90 days, in late November or early December.
The Wendy’s location is owned by Augusta-based Restwend LLC, which owns 15 Maine Wendy’s restaurants. The company launched a very similar rebuilding project two years ago at another Bangor restaurant on Bangor Mall Boulevard.
The Union Street restaurant’s 28 employees were given the option of relocating to other area stores, which most will do, according to Lust. Some have taken layoffs and will go back to school or collect temporary unemployment, Lust added.
Interviews for positions at the rebuilt Wendy’s will start in September, Lust said.
