RANGELEY, Maine — A Connecticut man is recovering after his rescue from the Appalachian Trail early Friday morning, according to the Maine Warden Service.

William Appleby, 56, transmitted a message via an emergency beacon that he was suffering severe abdominal pain while hiking in Township E, near Rangeley Plantation, according to Cpl. John MacDonald.

The abdominal pain was possibly caused by food poisoning, MacDonald said.

Game wardens responded at 2:30 a.m. and met with local firefighters to organize a search, and boat owner Allie Ladd offered rescuers a boat to get across Long Pond, MacDonald said.

Once across the pond, rescuers hiked 10 minutes to Appleby’s location and then transported him across Long Pond to a waiting ATV that brought him to an ambulance.

Appleby was transported to Rumford Hospital for evaluation.
