BANGOR, Maine — A cleanup operation is underway at the burned-out Family Dollar store on State Street in anticipation of the construction of a new one, a corporate spokeswoman said Tuesday.

“At this time, crews are still working to clean up the area before construction can begin on a new store. Please feel free to keep checking in with me on any updates, including an opening date,” Bryn Winburn, public and media relations manager for Family Dollar’s corporate office, said in an email seeking an update on the status of the State Street store.

The discount retail business was heavily damaged when a fire broke out there on Feb. 9. Though no injuries were reported, the fire resulted in the store’s closure.

The fire remains under investigation, according to Sgt. Tim York of the state fire marshal’s office and Sgt. Tim Cotton of the Bangor Police Department.

It was not clear Tuesday how many employees were displaced and when construction will begin on the new store.
