BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — A Boothbay Harbor woman who served as president of the high school boosters club and coached the school’s softball team through its most recent season has been charged with stealing from the school’s boosters club.

Heather O’Brien, 43, was arrested Thursday by Boothbay Harbor police and charged with Class C felony theft in connection with a crime that occurred in November 2013, according to court documents.

O’Brien served as president of the volunteer boosters club at Boothbay Region High School and was coach of the softball team, The Boothbay Register reported. The club supports school programs but is not affiliated directly with the school system.

Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Robert Hasch did not return phone calls on Tuesday. Eileen King, superintendent of the school district, declined to comment to the Bangor Daily News about the charges.

According to the Boothbay Register, O’Brien previously worked at the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, was active in local nonprofit groups and worked to promote local business and tourism.

King told the newspaper that when she learned the club’s account was overdrawn, she met with bank officials and reviewed the account, then contacted police.

Police, bank and school officials declined to comment on how much money allegedly was taken.

O’Brien was released on $2,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in Lincoln County Superior Court on Oct. 27.
