UNITY, Maine — A Unity man allegedly struck his girlfriend with his head, threatened to kill her and threatened to burn down their apartment Tuesday at a residence on the Bangor Road, according to police.
Andrew Stewart, 28, remained in police custody two days after the incident, which reportedly occurred after the woman came home from work, Chief Deputy Jason Trundy of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release issued Thursday.
The woman told investigating officers that after she returned home that day, Stewart was upset with her. She said that during the ensuing argument he struck and threatened her. In addition to saying he would burn down their apartment, Stewart said he would burn down the home of her relatives, the woman told police.
“She also indicated he had taken her phone to prevent her from calling law enforcement, forcing her to use a neighbor’s phone to call for help,” Trundy wrote.
When police deputies got to the home, Stewart was gone, but they were able to find him in a nearby field. Stewart was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, obstructing the report of a crime and violation of conditions of release.
He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, Trundy wrote, with bail set at $1,500 cash.
