ROCKLAND, Maine — A 22-year-old Westbrook man remains in jail after police say motorists reported witnessing him beating a woman in a car on Monday evening.
Dorian Ames was arrested Monday night and charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing and two counts of violating a condition of release.
Ames entered no plea to the charges when he made his initial court appearance Wednesday in Knox County Unified Court. Judge Susan Sparaco set bail on the new charges at $5,000 cash, but he will remain jailed because the York County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to revoke his bail on a prior domestic assault charge involving the same victim.
According to an affidavit filed by Rockland police, two motorists each called 911 Monday evening to report that they witnessed a man assaulting a woman in a car parked in the Rockland Hannaford parking lot. One caller said he saw the man slam her head into the dashboard and strike her head with his elbow.
A woman called to say that she saw the woman trying to get away from a man but he yanked her hard by her ponytail and then punched her in the head, face and shoulders, according to the affidavit.
The witnesses gave a description of the man and the vehicle. The vehicle was found later that night in Thomaston but Ames was not inside. He was found later at a Rockland residence. He denied striking the woman. The woman also denied being a victim.
There was a court order, however, prohibiting Ames from being in contact with the woman.
