FREEPORT, Maine — A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of an injured woman on Wednesday along Interstate 295, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Wayne Covington, 59, of Eliot was charged with domestic violence assault in connection with the woman’s injuries, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was found lying along the southbound ramp to the Desert Road exit about 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to McCausland.

The woman, who hails from Kittery, had an eye injury and was treated at Portland’s Mercy Hospital. McCausland believes the assault took place in a car in which she was a passenger along the interstate.
