SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A 41-year-old man was taken to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after allegedly threatening to jump off the Casco Bay Bridge Monday, police said.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was located on the railing on the South Portland side, according to South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark.

Police began negotiating with the man, who went outside of the bridge railing making indications he was going to jump, Clark said.

Police shut down both lanes of the bridge during the incident, and the man eventually agreed to cooperate with police and came back over the railing, Clark said.

The bridge has been reopened to traffic. The man was taken to Maine Medical Center to be evaluated.
