BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles scored five unanswered goals to beat the New England College Pilgrims 5-1 in their North Atlantic Conference men’s soccer opener Saturday.
Camille Sheehan gave NEC (5-4, 0-1 NAC) a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, but Phil Frost answered for Husson (5-4, 0-1) off a Cam Libbey assist.
Stephen Berenyi followed with a goal via a Josh Bean throw-in and then a header pass from Viktor Domberg to Miguel Caballero set up another Husson goal to conclude the first-half surge.
An own goal off NEC goalkeeper Tenzin Khenrab gave Husson another goal in the second half and Libbey ended the scoring from a Frost assist.
Cody Gross made seven saves for Husson and Khenrab had four for NEC.
UMF 2, Johnson St. 0
At Johnson, Vermont, UMaine-Farmington picked up its first North Atlantic Conference win of the season when Ibrahim Achekh scored a first-half goal and Yusuf Yama added another in the second half on Saturday.
Matt Wilson had six saves for UMF (3-2, 1-0).
Bates 2, Thomas 1
At Lewiston on Saturday, Luis Pereira scored the game-winning goal with 7:01 remaining in the first overtime period, giving Bates (4-0) the win.
Bates took a 1-0 lead at the 60-minute mark when David Murphy tapped in a rebound following a Pereira free kick.
The Terriers (2-3) evened the game in spectacular fashion, as Willie Clemons took a pass from Tre Ming and unleashed a bicycle kick past Bates goalie Sam Polito in the 67th minute.
Nearly three minutes into overtime, David Dick sent a cross to Pereira, who received the pass cleanly and knocked the ball into the upper right corner of the net.
Sam Polito made 11 saves for Bates and Joakim Sternas had 12 for Thomas.
Women’s Soccer
Maine 2, LIU Brooklyn 1
At Orono on Saturday, Charlene Achille scored one goal and assisted on another, both in the first half, to guide the Black Bears (5-3) by the Blackbirds (2-6).
Achille set up Ashley Robinson’s first goal and then put Maine up 2-0 when she blasted a shot from 30 yards out, placing the ball just under the crossbar and over the reach of goalkeeper Erin Harbison.
Madison Gomez scored a second-half goal for LIU and Harbison finished with 10 saves.
Claudia Dube-Trempe made four saves for Maine.
NEC 2, Husson 1
At Bangor, Michaela Pomeroy’s goal off an Emily Gubbins assist at the 95th minute gave New England College the overtime win.
Leah Hibbad converted a first-half penalty kick for Husson (2-3-1, 0-1), but NEC (3-4-1, 1-0) equalized in the second half when Tara Bainbridge booted in a shot from 40 yards out.
Jordyn Hopkins finished with 17 saves for Husson and Mackenzie Meegan had five for NEC.
Johnson 5, UMF 1
At Johnson, Vermont, on Saturday, Johnson State’s Kylie Arthier scored four of her team’s five first-half goals to give the Badgers the win.
Dayle Jordan scored a second-half goal for UMF and Sam Hatch finished with five saves.
Thomas 4, Daniel Webster 1
At Nashua, New Hampshire, on Saturday, four different players scored a goal to give Thomas the win.
Kasja Kaufedt, Cassie Contigiani, Bronte Howorth and Lauren Pelletier each scored for Thomas with Howorth and Camille Filloramo each adding an assist.
Bria Taylor scored a goal for Daniel Webster.
Field Hockey
Maine splits weekend
At Burlington, Vermont, the Maine Black Bears gave up the game’s first goal and then rolled to a 7-1 victory over Siena Saturday at the Catamount Classic.
After Siena’s Ashley Donna scored, Samantha Wagg, Katie Bingle and Danielle Aviani each rattled off first-half goals for the Black Bears.
Sydney Veljacic, Marissa Shaw, Wagg and Madison Cummings each added a second-half goal.
Siena is 1-4.
On Sunday, Krysten Mayers scored two unassisted first-half goals to lift Cornell (6-2) by the Black Bears (6-2) 2-0.
Maine outshot Cornell 17-12 with Mackenzie Gagliardi making two saves for Cornell while Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett split time in goal for Maine, each making a save.
Mount Holyoke 5, Thomas 1
At South Hadley, Massachusetts, Charlotte Wagner scored four goals to spark the victory on Saturday.
Sophany Srey scored off a Gabby Martell assist for Thomas of Waterville while Abbie Charrier (three saves) and Jessica Russell (four) split time in goal.
On Sunday, Thomas edged Plymouth State 3-2 behind two Abigail Dunn goals, including the game-winner.
Nicole Burgess scored two goals for Plymouth State, but Curry set up Erica Blake to tie it and Dunn scored her second goal to give the Terriers the winning edge at the 52-minute mark.
Charrier made nine saves for Thomas and Alivia Bates had five for the Pantherss
UMF 5, Rivier 0
At Farmington Sunday, Mara Balboni scored two goals and UMaine-Farmington scored four in the second half to secure the win.
Balboni scored UMF’s first-half goal and its first goal of the second half and then assisted on Emma Spahr’s goal. Andrea Stemm and Susan Newkirk each added a goal for UMF (4-0).
