AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage will hold a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The meeting, announced late Monday afternoon, is expected to focus on LePage’s “vision for Maine, including further reducing the income tax; reforming welfare by strengthening the state’s safety net for the most vulnerable; cutting energy costs and addressing Maine’s high student debt burden,” a release from his office stated.
The meeting, set to run for one hour, will be held in Thomas Auditorium, which is in Preble Hall’s Room 117.
LePage is expected to deliver remarks and answer questions from local residents.
The governor hosted a series of similar public events while the Legislature was in session to promote his biennial budget proposal, which included major tax reform provisions. Lawmakers passed a compromise budget that eliminated most of the key elements of LePage’s plan. That budget took effect — despite LePage’s veto — on July 1.
When it became clear that his tax reform package would not make it into law, LePage said he would introduce a ballot question to allow Mainers to vote on lowering the income tax rate. He and the Maine Republican Party also have said they would pursue a ballot question or questions next year designed to enact welfare law changes that legislators have resisted.
Details of those ballot questions have yet to be made public.
