AUGUSTA, Maine — The state’s top education official could be out of work for the rest of the month after breaking a vertebra in a fall in his barn last week.

Tom Desjardin, Maine’s acting education commissioner, suffered his injury in a fall on Sept. 13, according to Maine Department of Education spokeswoman Anne Gabbianelli. She said his prognosis is “very positive,” and he hopes to be back in the office within two weeks.

“He is home recovering and doing quite well with the support of a back brace for perhaps eight weeks,” Gabbianelli said.

Desjardin is still in contact with his department on a daily basis, “participating as his health allows,” she added.
