MADAWASKA LAKE, Maine — A Frenchville couple received minor injuries after a 1-gallon plastic container of orange-flavored drink crashed through the windshield of their moving vehicle Monday evening, according to police.
Patrick Chasse, 86, was traveling north on Route 161 near Madawaska Lake with his wife, Alice Chasse, no age given, in a 2010 Ford Escape just after 7 p.m. when the plastic jug crashed through the front windshield, Trooper Chuck Michaud of the Maine State Police said Tuesday afternoon. The jug continued through the vehicle and broke out through the rear window, Michaud said.
At the time of the accident, Chasse was traveling in a 55 mph zone about 200 yards behind another northbound vehicle, but the trooper said it hadn’t been determined yet whether the jug came from that car or from another car passing in the opposite direction.
Chasse, who reported he did not see the jug in the air before it hit his windshield, and his wife were taken to Cary Medical Center. They were treated for injuries primarily from glass cuts, Michaud said.
Their SUV had an estimated $2,000 in damages, according to the trooper.
State police are attempting to locate the driver of the other vehicle, and Michaud said it is possible they were unaware of the accident behind them.
