CARIBOU, Maine — Maine State Police on Monday continued to investigate the homicide of a Caribou man found dead last week in a burning building in Caribou.

It could be at least another day before DNA tests positively identity the man found Friday inside the home at 5 Lower Lyndon St., Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Monday afternoon.

The victim was discovered in the home just before 10 p.m. after Caribou firefighters went to deal with the fire call. The body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed. While police have declared the death a homicide, the cause of death has not yet been released.

Fire damage to the home was confined to the interior, according to McCausland.

McCausland said Monday that police are still asking the public to report any information that they may have about the incident to police.

Police already have conducted an informational roadblock in an effort to find passers-by who might have seen someone entering or leaving the residence about the time of the fire.

“If there is anyone who saw anything going on around that house or anyone near that house on that night, we are asking people to come forward,” he said.

If anyone has information, call the state police barracks in Houlton at 532-5400.
