BASKETBALL
BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation will hold tryouts for the upcoming Travel Basketball Program for all girls and boys in grades 5-6 and 7-8 on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bangor High School Gymnasium. Tryouts for grades 5-6 are 8:30 a.m. with check-in 8-8:30 a.m.; and grades 7-8 at 9:30 a.m. with check-in 9-9:30 a.m. Players must pre-register and attend tryouts to be considered for teams. GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team will host its annual Huskies’ Shooting Clinic open to girls in grades 3-10 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham Campus of the University of Southern Maine. The fee for the clinic is $35 in advance and $45 the day of the clinic. Confirmation of registration will be done via email. Participants will receive instruction and coaching in a variety of drills including a lay-up series, shooting off the dribble, shooting off the pass, post shooting, creating your own shot, and more. SKOWHEGAN — Special Olympics Maine athletes will compete in showmanship, English and Western equitation, driving, working trials, unified relays and speed barrels during the 18th annual State Equestrian Competition, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Skowhegan Fairgrounds. Special Olympics Somerset County along with members of Good Sam will be running a concession stand throughout the day. Maine has one of the largest Equestrian programs in the country with 133 athletes and 18 teams scheduled to compete Oct. 3. BANGOR — Field Hockey Skills Clinic led by Bangor High School field hockey coach Kasey Danforth and her staff will be held for three weeks 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9-10 a.m. Saturdays, Oct. 7-24, at Bangor High School field hockey field. The clinic, open to pre-kindergarten through fifth grade girls, is geared for all ability levels. The fee is $30 for Bangor residents and $35 for non-residents and all equipment is provided for use at the clinic. OLD TOWN — Old Town Recreation Center’s first Turkey Bowl, a double elimination adult flag football tournament, on Nov. 1. The tournament will feature six on six play, with a maximum of eight players per team. The entry fee is $60 per team. ORONO — Registration for all Maine Junior Black Bears youth hockey house divisions is now open. Programs are available for ages 4-18 and include Learn to Skate/Learn to Play in partnership with the University of Maine Hockey teams. Other age groups are Midgets, Bantams, Peewees, Squirts, and Mites. All teams are co-ed and girls can cross-roster for U-12 all-girls team. BREWER — Brewer Youth hockey is accepting registrations for its Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey sessions. There will be two, 12-week sessions this season. Participants can sign up for one session or both. Sessions will be held at 12:40 p.m. Sundays, beginning Oct. 25, at the Penobscot Ice Arena, 90 Acme Road. The cost will be $75 per session. ROAD RACING
OLD TOWN — Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics will hold a benefit 5K road race, 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, starting at Orono/Old Town YMCA in Old Town. The race is on a flat, fast course utilizing roads and bike paths. New and experienced runners and walkers are welcome. There will be awards for top finishers, first and second place age group winners, top three Special Olympic athletes, as well as the oldest and youngest participants. Advance entry fee is $20 until Oct. 7, after which it will be $25.
