DEDHAM, Maine — A Bar Harbor man was injured early Thursday morning when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Route 1A, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephen Hopkins, 35, was traveling to Bangor when he apparently dozed off around 5:30 a.m. and lost control of his Ford Explorer, Deputy Dana Austin said.

Hopkins’ vehicle went off the road and wound up in a ditch on the northbound side of the highway, Austin said.

The crash occurred just south of Green Lake Road. Hopkins did not have any passengers in the vehicle.

Hopkins’ injuries were not considered life-threatening, and he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance, the deputy said. The road was briefly shut down to traffic.

Dedham firefighters assisted at the scene.
