ROCKLAND, Maine — A Warren man who forced his way into a Spruce Head home earlier this year and wrestled with the homeowner for control of a gun reached a deal with the state Tuesday that will see him serve 30 days in jail.

Daryl Young pleaded guilty Tuesday in Knox County Unified Court to criminal trespass. The agreement worked out with the district attorney’s office calls for a deferred disposition in which Young would be required to undergo substance abuse counseling, refrain from use of alcohol or drugs, and adhere to an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew at his parents’ home over the next year.

If he meets those conditions, he will be sentenced to 30 days in jail. If he violates those terms, he could face up to 364 days in jail.

According to police, Young forced his way into a Spruce Head home early in the morning on April 26, saying he was being chased and threatened by someone with a gun. Young was wet and suffering from hypothermia and appeared to be under the influence of something, police said.

The homeowner said he kept trying to get the man out the door, but the man allegedly would not and there was a struggle. The homeowner told police that he called for his wife to get his gun, according to the police affidavit filed in court after the incident. Young was able to get the gun briefly before the homeowner was able to get it back.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald said the victims in the case supported the agreement with the condition that Young receive treatment for his substance abuse.
