JAY, Maine — Family and friends of a Maine crew member came together Wednesday to remember his life.

Michael Holland was part of the El Faro’s crew. The 25-year-old was a 3rd assistant engineer on the cargo ship when it sank during Hurricane Joaquin.

Deb Roberts, Holland’s mother, said he “crossed a lot of things off his bucket list. I’m sure he had no idea that his life would be cut short so abruptly.”

While there are still questions about how and why the El Faro sank, his family and friends said they are moving forward by holding on and letting go.

“We’re going to put a yellow ribbon at home and hope for a miracle, and understand science and reality and move forward and honor him and make sure he’s never forgotten,” Roberts said.

Gov. Paul LePage ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Franklin County until sunset as a tribute to Holland.

The governor said his heart goes out to the families and friends of Mainers and other crew members lost at sea.
