HERMON, Maine — A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized Friday afternoon after losing control of her vehicle on Crogan Road, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed, apparently fell asleep at the wheel while rounding a corner near the Union Street intersection, Deputy David Quinn said.

The driver was traveling toward Union Street and went straight into the woods, missing several trees, the deputy said.

Despite being trapped in the vehicle, the woman was alert and talking to responders, Quinn said. He added she called 911 after the crash, which was reported about 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters from Levant and Hermon used the Jaws of Life to free the driver, who was alone in the vehicle. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The car was destroyed.
