PORTLAND, Maine — A Lyman man was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to a year and a day in prison for Social Security fraud.
Mark J. LaPierre, 55, also was ordered to pay $38,212 in restitution, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
U.S. District Judge Jon Levy ordered LaPierre to report to prison on Jan. 8, according to information posted on the court’s electronic case filing system.
LaPierre waived indictment and pleaded guilty in April to one count of Social Security fraud.
By pleading guilty he admitted that between November 2010 and April 2014 he continued to receive and spend his mother’s Social Security benefits after her death.
LaPierre used the money to pay his own personal bills and expenses, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
His crime was discovered last year when the Social Security Tele-Service Center in Boston received an anonymous tip about the fraud and terminated the benefits.
