PENOBSCOT, Maine — Fire gutted a two-story farmhouse Sunday afternoon at 1393 Castine Road.
The renters who were living in the home were not at home when the blaze broke out, according to Penobscot Fire Chief Dennis Robertson.
“We got their dog out but lost a cat,” he said. “Another cat is missing.”
The owners of the home live in Portland, the chief said.
The fire was reported about 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was full of smoke, according to Robertson. Firefighters were on the scene for about six hours.
“It was a stubborn fire,” the chief said.
A fire marshal is expected to visit the scene Monday to determine the cause of the fire.
“I have no reason to believe it to be suspicious,” Robertson said.
In addition to firefighters from Penobscot, crews from Orland, Castine, Brooksville and Sedgwick also assisted. Brooksville was on standby for the other departments.
