BRADLEY, Maine — There is one opening on the RSU 34 school board that must be filled by a Bradley resident and since no one from town is on the ballot, a write-in candidate will fill the post, a note posted on the town’s website states.

Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“I’m a little bit surprised” no one is on the ballot, said incumbent Mildred Cannon, who has decided not to run for a second three-year term.

She decided not to run “for a number of reasons,” the biggest being that her daughter moved to Florida and she expects to be gone for portions of the year.

Local elections are typically in June, but the year Cannon was elected the decision was made by town officials to have school board elections coincide with state elections, she said.

“I got the most votes ever for a school board member,” said Cannon, adding that a lot more people vote during November elections.

Those interested in serving on the school board should let other voters know to write in their full names.

“Candidates may still be voted on by a ‘write-in’ vote,” the town’s website states. “If you are interested in serving the community of Bradley and Regional School Unit No. 34, please get the word out for the November 3, 2015 election.”

The nine-member RSU 34 school board has a total of three seats up for grabs on Tuesday. Old Town school board incumbents James Dill and Roxanne Dubey are up against resident Brooke Gardner for two open seats.
