NEF sets Veterans Day ticket giveaway
LEWISTON, Maine – New England Fights will offer a free Veterans Day ticket giveaway for past and present military personnel for its upcoming NEF XX mixed martial arts and boxing card.
The ticket giveaway for the Nov. 21 show will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee box office, 190 Birch St., Lewiston. The giveaway is open to all branches of the military. Personnel must present a valid military identification card at the box office window. There will be a limit of one ticket per identification card.
Earlier this year, the company ran a similar giveaway in conjunction with Memorial Day weekend.
“We consider these military giveaways to be one of the most important things we do as a company,” said NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “Being able to give back a little to those who have given so much means a great deal to us. God bless all who serve our country.”
Patriots sign two linemen to practice squad
The New England Patriots signed offensive linemen Keavon Milton and Torrian Wilson to the practice squad and released wide receiver Austin Hill and defensive back Floyd Raven Sr. from the practice squad on Tuesday.
Milton, 25, played in eight games for the Cleveland Browns in 2013 on special teams and as a blocking tight end and saw action in one game for the Seattle Seahawks last year. He was released on Sept. 5 by the Seahawks.
Wilson, 23, was signed as a rookie free agent by the Detroit Lions on May 7 and released on Sept. 5.
Hill, 24, was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on Oct. 1 after being released by the New York Jets on Aug. 30. Raven, 22, joined the Patriots’ practice squad on Oct. 28 after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 5.
Canadiens goalie remains off the ice
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will remain sidelined this week with a unspecified lower-body injury.
Coach Michel Therrien said Tuesday that Price won’t need surgery but refused to provide specifics about the injury.
“Carey was not responding all that well to treatment, so he was a bit worried,” Therrien said. “It happens often; there aren’t two athletes who respond the same way to treatment. So he asked to get a second opinion on his injury.”
Asked for more details on the nature of Price’s injury, Therrien said, “We’re fighting against the competition. Why would we give an advantage to the competition? I see no positive in saying exactly what it is.”
Ohio State QB Barrett pleads guilty
Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett on Tuesday entered a guilty plea to a drunken-driving charge he received early Halloween morning.
A Columbus Municipal Court judge suspended Barrett’s license for 180 days. Barrett also was fined $400 and ordered to complete a three-day alcohol education program.
The judge dismissed another charge of backing without safety.
“I apologize to the Ohio State football program and Buckeye Nation,” Barrett said in a brief statement before Judge H. William Pollitt Jr., a former middle linebacker who played for former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes.
Former Cowboys RB Randle suspended
Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was suspended for four games by the NFL on Tuesday under the league’s personal conduct policy.
The disciplinary action comes a week after the Cowboys released Randle, who had left the team to deal with an unspecified personal issue.
Randle is currently not on a team’s active roster, but the suspension begins immediately. If Randle signs with another team, he will be eligible to return in Week 14.
Earlier this year, the NFL investigated an arrest in February in Randle’s hometown of Wichita, Kan. Police refused to pursue charges against him in a domestic disturbance complaint, but the NFL’s investigators determined that Randle violated league policies.
Randle, a three-year veteran, is a free agent after clearing waivers last week. He is available to sign with another team, but it’s considered unlikely that another club will take a chance on the 23-year-old this season.
