BRUNSWICK, Maine — Charges against a Brunswick man accused of beating his 91-year-old father with a baseball bat have been elevated to include attempted murder.

Christopher Porter, 49, was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with elevated aggravated assault after he allegedly attacked his father, James Porter, with a bat earlier that morning at their home on Mere Point Road.

Porter suffered head injuries and was taken by Brunswick rescue workers to Maine Medical Center, police said at the time.

After being taken into custody without incident, Christopher Porter went to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation. He was later taken to the Brunswick police station, where he was charged with elevated aggravated assault.

In an email to the Bangor Daily News, Cumberland County Assistant District Attorney Michael Madigan confirmed that the charge of attempted murder has been added to the original charge of elevated aggravated assault.

Porter remained in Cumberland County Jail on Thursday held on $100,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on Jan. 7.
