BERWICK, Maine — Local police are investigating the dumping of a burned car discovered on the side of Ridlon Road early Saturday.
The destroyed vehicle was found about 2 a.m. and reported to police, Berwick police Sgt. Steve Shisler said Saturday afternoon.
Shisler said the car was set ablaze in another location and when the fire was out and the shell had cooled, it was left in the rural area where it was found.
A photograph of the burned car was posted on the department’s Facebook page.
“It is not unusual for cars to be shot, burned or just abandoned in the sand pits located off Ridlon Road, but finding one on the side of that road is,” he said. “This is the third one dumped in that area in the past two weeks.”
Shisler said that he did not know if the vehicle identification number on the car found Saturday could be recovered because it was so badly burned.
He also said that no cars in town have been reported stolen in the past few days.
What was left of the car was towed and will be examined more thoroughly Monday. If its owner can’t be identified or found and the car is not claimed, the towing company would dispose of it properly, police said.
Anyone with information about the dumping of the vehicle is asked to call the Berwick police at 698-1136.
