BRUNSWICK, Maine — Brunswick police on Monday released a composite sketch of a “person of interest” who may have been involved in a sexual assault reported at Bowdoin College’s Mayflower Apartments on Tuesday.

The white man is estimated to be in his late 20s, slender and between 5 foot, 10 inches and 6 feet tall. He allegedly was seen loitering in the area of the apartments at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. He had not been seen previously in the neighborhood, Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said Monday.

Brunswick police and emergency medical workers went to the complex on Belmont Street, about two blocks away from campus, just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after a student said she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man in her bedroom.

The woman reported that a stranger entered her apartment through an unlocked exterior door and sexually assaulted her, Waltz said last week. The victim was unable to give police a description of her attacker because the lights were off in her room and it was too dark to see him, Waltz said Monday.

The woman was examined and treated at Mid Coast Hospital and later released, college spokesman Doug Cook said Thursday.

The man was wearing layered clothing, possibly with a red top layer, and dark blue or black pants. His hair was matted and not combed, according to the description.

Waltz said police are simply trying to identify the man, and that he may or may not have been involved in the alleged assault.

Anyone with information about the man’s identity should call Brunswick police Detective Greg Mears at 725-5521 or contact him by email at gmears@brunswickpd.org.
