PORTLAND, Maine — A South Portland man who shot a gun at two occupants of a car in Scarborough in May will serve 10 years in federal prison after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Wayne Sunderland, also known as Sean Johnson and Thomas Butler, 32, was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison and three years supervised release by Chief Judge Nancy Torresen in U.S. District Court.
Sunderland pleaded guilty on July 9, 2015.
He was previously convicted of felony drug trafficking in Maine in 2013, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II.
On May 23, 2015, Sunderland pulled alongside another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of Payne Road and the Maine Turnpike approach in Scarborough, then fired a shot into the vehicle. The bullet missed both occupants and lodged in the driver’s side door.
A passing driver reported the incident to police, and Scarborough officers located Sunderland’s vehicle parked in a driveway not far from the scene, according to the release.
Sunderland was arrested in nearby woods. A police dog led officers to Sunderland’s gun, a Glock 9 mm semiautomatic pistol buried under leaves near the vehicle.
The case was investigated by the Scarborough, Portland, South Portland and Lewiston police departments and the Southern Maine Gang Task Force, which includes agents and officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
