Brothers earn spots in national bowling tourney
BANGOR — Brothers Brandon and Jacob Dubuc of Auburn earned qualifying berths in the under-20 age division for the national Junior Gold Championships during a Maine State Junior Gold Bowlers tourney Saturday at Family Fun Lanes.
Brandon Dubuc, who also bowls for the University of Pikeville (Kentucky), recorded a 1,086 pinfall for five games while Jacob Dubuc, who bowls out of Sparetime Recreation in Lewiston, recorded a 1,063.
Christopher Haney of Brewer rolled a 1,028 to also earn a berth in the national tourney for the U15 age group. Brandon Dubuc and Haney also each won Maine tourney titles while Haney, who bowls at Family Fun, collected the crown based on head-to-head matches.
Brandon Plummer of Scarborough and Darren Forkey Jr. of Waterville also recorded high series of 1,043 and 1,001, respectively.

UMaine freshman football player is finalist for national award
ORONO — University of Maine freshman wide receiver Micah Wright has been named one of 20 finalist for the STATS Freshman Player of the Year.
Wright led all freshmen and finished second in the CAA with 61 receptions, and he was second among freshmen and in the conference with 818 yards. His five touchdowns tied for fifth among the FCS. Wright had four 100-yard games, including a 198-yard effort against Elon on Nov. 14, which earned him CAA Rookie of the Week honors.
Carew needs heart transplant
Hall of Famer Rod Carew is striving to qualify for a heart transplant after surviving a massive heart attack in September.
The renowned seven-time batting champion told Sports Illustrated that he suffered the heart attack while golfing in Corona, Calif., about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
Carew, 70, told the magazine that he was brought back to life by doctors. He said he underwent six hours of open-heart surgery and had a device installed to pump blood.
Winnipeg goalie out until January
The Winnipeg Jets placed goaltender Ondrej Pavelec on injured reserve Monday with a lower-body injury.
Jets coach Paul Maurice said later that Pavelec won’t return a least until January, saying on the team’s Twitter account, “He’s not playing in December. Hoping for January/February.”
This prognosis indicates Pavelec will miss at least 16 games and probably more.
Pavelec sustained the injury in the second period of the Jets’ 3-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night after a collision with Coyotes right winger Shane Doan. Pavelec has a 5-6-1 record this season.
Goalie Connor Hellebuyck was recalled from Manitoba of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
Hawks coach Budenholzer fines $25,000
Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer has been fined $25,000 for making incidental contact with a game official.
Kiki VanDeWeghe, the NBA’s executive vice president of basketball operations, announced the fine on Monday.
The incident, for which Budenholzer was assessed a technical foul and ejected, occurred with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter of Atlanta’s 109-97 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena.
Budenholzer stepped out to the 3-point line on the court and appeared to bump referee Ben Taylor, prompting the ejection.
