LIMERICK, Maine — The York County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accidental discharge of a weapon on Tuesday, which resulted in a woman’s hand being injured.

Deputies say 57-year-old Debra Baptista of Limerick saw a coyote in her backyard while her two dogs were on her porch. Baptista took her dogs in the house because she surmised the coyote was watching them.

Baptista loaded her rifle and it discharged accidentally, according to deputies. A bullet hit the floor and some fragments hit her friend, 42-year-old Jessica Carroll, in the hand. She suffered slight abrasions on her right pinky finger and thumb.

Carroll was treated by rescue personnel at the scene. She went to the hospital on her own and was treated and released.

No charges are expected.
