BANGOR, Maine — Marie Jordan was startled early Friday morning by a series of loud banging noises. At first, she thought someone was trying to break into her Center Street home.
Jordan soon learned from a police officer, who knocked on her door, that just three doors down two people had been shot, leaving one man dead and another seriously injured.
“It’s pretty terrifying for the day to start off that way,” she said during an interview Saturday outside her home. “This is normally a really good neighborhood, we thought it was turning around.”
Police arrived at 201 Center St., the scene of the shooting, around 3:30 a.m. Later that evening, officers arrested Robert Hansley, 27, and Thomas Ferguson, 37, both of Brooklyn, New York. Police say they will be charged with murder and elevated aggravated assault.
“Bangor police have done a wonderful job,” Jordan said.
Police declined to release any new details over the weekend, including the identities of the two victims, citing the ongoing criminal investigation. Sgt. Wade Betters said Sunday he had no information on the condition of the wounded individual, though a police spokesman has said he underwent surgery and is expected to recover. Investigators might not release more details until Monday.
A check for criminal records in Maine on Hansley and Ferguson yielded no results. The Bangor Daily News has requested criminal records from New York on the two suspects, but no response had been received as of early Sunday afternoon.
An autopsy on the body of the man killed was scheduled for Sunday. A spokesman for the state medical examiner’s office did not respond to a message Sunday asking whether that exam was completed and what the findings were.
The Bangor Police Department’s crime scene investigation van was gone Sunday morning after spending most of Friday and Saturday on scene. Police remained in the area, keeping an eye on the apartment.
Hansley and Ferguson were arrested around 6:30 p.m. when their vehicle was stopped on Hammond Street. Before Hansley and Ferguson’s arrest, police said they did not believe there was any threat to the public.
The men are expected to make their first appearances in court either Monday or Tuesday. If convicted of murder, each man faces between 25 years and life in prison.
This was Maine’s 19th homicide of the year, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
