LEWISTON, Maine — Desiree Smith scored 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to lead Colby to a 62-57 non-conference victory over the Bates College women’s basketball team on Sunday in the Bobcats’ home opener in Alumni Gymnasium.

The Mules led by three points after three quarters and tried to pull away, going up 51-42 with a layup by Smith, two more by Carylanne Wolfington and another by Mia Diplock. Bates came back with a layup by Allie Coppola and a three-point play by Bernadette Connors.

Wolfington assisted Haley Driscoll for a hoop down low to give Colby a 59-50 edge with 2:06 left, but Bates came back again, as Coppola knocked down a jumper and Nina Davenport hit two free throws to cut it to 59-54 with 1:13 to go.

Davenport answered a pair of free throws by Diplock by draining a 3-pointer on a Connors assist with 45 seconds left, and then she stole the ball from Wolfington with 39 seconds to go, but the Bobcats turned the ball over and had to foul Smith, who made one of two foul shots to make it a secure 62-57 with 19 seconds to go.

Wolfington paced Colby of Waterville (4-0) with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists while Diplock added 11 points, three assists and four steals.

Coppola led Bates (0-4) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Connors contributed with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists while Davenport chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Bowdoin 65, Salve Regina 39

At Newport, Rhode Island, 13 of Bowdoin’s 14 players each scored at least a point as the Polar Bears of Brunswick rolled by Salve Regina on Saturday.

Shannon Brady scored 10 points to lead Bowdoin (2-2) while Kate Kerrigan and Lydia Caputi each added eight. Kerrigan also had eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Meaghan Harden and Olivia Pierce each scored seven points to lead Salve Regina (1-5).

Men’s Basketball

Colby 63, Regis 62

At Weston, Massachusetts, Ryan Jann hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.2 seconds left to lift Colby by Regis on Sunday.

Colby had a seven-point lead with 2:26 left after Sam Willson hit a layup, but the Pride rallied with a 9-0 run to take the lead.

Chris Hudnet led the Mules of Waterville (3-1) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Luke Westman chipped in with 10 points and Patrick Stewart netted eight.

Sam Jean-Gilles paced Regis (2-3) with 19 points and Jordan Monts added 14.

UNE 101, Bates 89

At Lewiston, Devin Thompson, Drew Coveney and C.J. Autry combined for 57 points and the University of New England pulled away from Bates in the final eight minutes to secure a victory Sunday.

Thompson finished with 21 points to lead UNE (5-2) while Coveney and Autry each added 18. Coveney also had eight assists.

Malcolm Delpeche paced Bates (2-2) with 18 points and Justin Zukowski added 15. Mike Boornazian chipped in with 14 and Quin Leary had 10. Boornazian and Marcus Delpeche each had eight rebounds.

Bowdoin 88, Babson 84

At Brunswick, Bowdoin squandered a 17-point second-half lead but hit 12 of 14 free throws in overtime to knock off 10th-ranked Babson on Sunday.

Lucas Hausman poured in 33 points, including 12 of 12 from the line, to lead Bowdoin (2-2). He also had five rebounds and three assists. Jack Simonds chipped in win 29 points and four assists.

Bradley Jacks paced Babson (5-1) with 30 points, Joey Flannery added 21 and Isaiah Nelsen put in 18.

Iowa 84, Wichita St. 61

Iowa dominated No. 20 Wichita State with a smooth and efficient offense to win the seventh-place game 84-61 in the AdvoCare Invitational at the HP Field House in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday.

Senior guard Ron Baker scored eight points for the Shockers (2-4), who lost their third straight game. They are playing without injured point guard Fred VanVleet, center Anton Grady and reserve guard Landry Shamet. Grady suffered a spinal concussion in Friday’s game and remains hospitalized in a local trauma center.

Iowa (4-2) took control with a 15-2 run early in the game and started the second half with an 11-0 run. The Hawkeyes expanded their lead to 31 in the second half. Wichita State’s 18-2 run cut the lead to 66-51 in the second half.

Senior forward Jarrod Uthoff led Iowa with 22 points. Senior center Adam Woodbury added 15. Iowa shot 53.8 percent from the field and held the Shockers to 35.6-percent shooting.

Freshman forward Eric Hamilton led the Shockers with 14 points, a season high.
