GSA, Greely runners are top Mainers in Foot Locker race
BRONX, New York — John Hassett of Castine and Katherine Leggat-Barr of North Yarmouth were the top Maine finishers in the Northeast Regional in the 37th Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.
Hassett, a George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill standout, finished 33rd in a field of 168 with a time of 16 minutes, 22.2 seconds in the 5-kilometer boys seeded race while Greely of Cumberland standout Leggat-Barr finished 30th in a field of 108 in the girls seeded race in 19:05.8.
Madeleine Davison of Wexford, Pennsylvania, and Noah Affolder of Fort Drum, N.Y., won the girls and boys races with times of 17:39.1 and 15:23.9, respectively.
The top 10 runners in each seeded race qualified for the national championships on Dec. 12 in San Diego, California.
Maine college players earned regional field hockey honors
Bowdoin College has placed five players on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s New England West Region first team.
Kimmy Ganong, Mettler Growney, Kim Kahnweiler, Rachel Kennedy and Kelsey Mullaney each received first-team honors for Bowdoin, the NCAA Division III national runnerup.
Colby’s Megan Fortier and Bates’ Caroline O’Reilly were named to the second team.
Several other players from Maine colleges also were honored as Taylor Bergeron of Thomas College and Nicole Matarozzo of the University of New England were named to the New England East Region first team while UNE’s Kersey Boulay, Thomas’ Brooklyn Curry and the University of Maine-Farmington’s Delainey Kein and Patty Smith were selected to the second team.
Kentucky remains No. 1 in AP poll
Kentucky remained No. 1 for a second straight week and Maryland and Michigan State held on to the next two spots in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll released Monday.
The Wildcats (6-0) received 59 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.
Maryland (6-0) remained second with four first-place votes and Michigan State (7-0) had the other two No. 1 votes.
Kansas and Iowa State switched places at fourth and fifth. They were followed by Oklahoma, Duke, Villanova, North Carolina and Virginia.
Syracuse, which beat Connecticut and Texas A&M in winning the Battle 4 Atlantis, moved into the poll at No. 14.
Six teams dropped out of the rankings — Indiana, California, Notre Dame, Connecticut, Wichita State and LSU.
Purdue is ranked No. 11, followed by Xavier, Gonzaga, Syracuse, Oregon, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Arizona, West Virginia, Miami, SMU, Providence, Louisville and Baylor.
Canadiens’ Price out six weeks
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, last season’s winner of the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP, will miss at least six weeks with a lower-body injury, the team announced Monday.
The injury is believed to be to his left knee, the Montreal Gazette reported. He will not need surgery, however.
Price, a four-time All-Star, has played in only 12 games this season and has a 2.06 goals-against average.
He had missed nine games with a lower-body injury before suffering a similar injury in last Wednesday’s game against the New York Rangers.
Cards’ Johnson breaks leg
Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson suffered a fractured tibia in Sunday’s game, according to a Fox Sports report.
He presumably will miss a significant period of time, although it is unclear how long he will be sidelined.
Johnson is currently fourth in the NFL with 814 rushing yards this season.
Rolovich introduced as Hawaii coach
Nick Rolovich was introduced as Hawaii’s new head football coach on Monday.
Athletic director David Matlin announced the hiring of Rolovich, a former Hawaii quarterback, on Friday. He replaces Norm Chow, who was fired.
Rolovich, a former Hawaii quarterback, said he plans to coach with aloha, encouraging his athletes to play for one another and do what’s right for their community.
“I didn’t know what aloha was until I got here in 2000,” he said in his first press conference as Hawaii’s coach. “My parents raised me in the right way … they taught me to treat people right, they taught me to care about people and they taught me to respect the place where I’m living.”
