BATH, Maine — A former registered sex offender charged last week with breaking into a woman’s house in Bath, exposing himself, then chasing her upstairs faces additional charges, Bath police said Tuesday.

Stephen L. McIntire, 55, of Bath was arrested early Nov. 25 at his home after a police dog allegedly tracked him from the woman’s house to his house, according to a news release issued by Bath police Chief Michael Field.

McIntire’s criminal history includes a 1997 conviction for felony gross sexual assault and a 2015 conviction for burglary, both Class B felonies, as well as seven misdemeanors including violation of privacy and failure to comply with the sex offender registry.

In December 2014, McIntire was charged with allegedly violating “Peeping Tom” laws after police said video cameras caught him “peeping” in windows on the Hyde School campus in Bath.

McIntire is no longer required to register as a sex offender, according to police.

Officers went to a Cherry Street home at 6:17 p.m. on Nov. 24 after a woman reported she was hiding in her bedroom from a burglar who had chased her upstairs and was attempting to enter the room. She later told police that she arrived home to find a man sitting on her couch exposing himself. She said she ran upstairs, locked herself in a bedroom, retrieved a handgun and called police.

Police searched the home but were unable to find the suspect. With assistance from Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s deputies, Bath police Cpl. Michelle Small and her police dog allegedly tracked the suspect to McIntire’s home. After a search warrant was issued, officers allegedly found evidence linking him to the crime.

Police arrested McIntire at his home without incident and took him to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. During an arraignment hearing the day he was arrested, McIntire’s bail was increased from $2,000 to $10,000 cash.

In addition to Class C felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal threatening, indecent conduct and theft charges, police charged McIntire with Class C felony aggravated criminal trespass. The case remains under investigation.
