University of Maine field hockey player Nicole Sevey has been selected to the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA All-American second team.

Sevey, a senior midfielder from Skowhegan, is the eighth Black Bear in program history to be selected as an All-American and it’s the third year in a row that a Black Bear has been an All-American.

This selection includes a year full of accolades for Sevey who was named by Longstreth/NFHCA as a member of its Northeast All-Region first team last week. She also has been selected for the NFHCA senior all-star game in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has been named to the America East all-conference first team.

She started in all 23 games for Maine this season and accumulated four goals and a career high eight assists while leading the Black Bears (19-4) to a berth in the America East championship game, where they were beaten by Albany.

Maine Maritime’s Burgess on All-East team

Maine Maritime Academy’s Michael Burgess of North Yarmouth has been named to the D3football.com All-East Region First Team Defense at the special teams utility position.

Burgess registered a total of five blocked kicks and holds the all-time school-record with 15 career blocked kicks.

The senior recorded a single-game school record of three blocked kicks, including a blocked punt, blocked PAT and blocked field goal to lead the Mariners to a victory over Curry College this season.

As a punter, Burgess punted a tallied 1,435 yards on 39 punts (36.8 yards per punt), ranking third all-time in a single season, including a long-punt of 64 yards and nine punts inside of the 20-yard line.

Husson’s Smith named All-New England

Husson University sophomore running back John Smith has been named to the New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team.

Smith is the second Eagle player to be selected to the team twice and the seventh overall in program history, and he was one of 28 players from 18 different Division II or III institutions in New England to be selected to the team.

This season, Smith broke nine single-season school records, including rushing yards (1,733), rushing attempts (296), rushing touchdowns (20) and rushing yards per game (173.3).

He led the conference in rushes, yards, yards per rush (5.9) and touchdowns, while surpassing the 100-yard mark in all but two contests, tying his single-season record of eight, which was set last season, and hit the 200-yard mark twice.

Smith has 16 100-yard rushing games in his career, leaving him one shy of the career mark.
