FAIRFIELD, Maine — A woman said she found a python in her apartment in Fairfield. The owner of the python is waiting to get it back from authorities.

Mary Bradstreet heard what sounded like her dog walking across the floor, but it wasn’t her dog.

“I was in the other room. It was time to settle down for the night and, uh, not so much,” Bradstreet said. “It’s a snake.”

She found the python in her living room. “It went underneath the couch as my son turned on the light and it was like, the excitement, it was just crazy,” Bradstreet said.

Not knowing who it belonged to, she called police, who came and took it away.

When Bradstreet told the story to her neighbor, who lives on the other side of the building, she found out that’s actually where the snake came from.

Joseph Varricchio said 6-year-old Skully is a beloved family pet who probably got out through their ceiling in search of a warmer spot.

“That’s my snake. You know?” Varricchio said. “He’s the first snake that I got and he’s just really cool.”

The Maine Warden Service said they had put the python in a temporary home.

“We were looking for placement because we wanted to find a home for it. Typically, in this situation an owner doesn’t come forward,” Kendall Marden, wildlife biologist, said.

They said they’re working to get Skully back to his family.

“We’re hoping by this evening, maybe early tomorrow morning,” Marden said.

“I want my snake back,” Varricchio said.
