CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts — The Boston College Eagles shut down the University of Maine Black Bears to record a 91-60 men’s basketball victory Sunday at Conte Forum.
BC held the Bears to a 36.8 percent shooting effort (21 of 57) from the floor while the Eagles countered with a 53.7 percent effort (36 of 67) on their end.
Maine failed to get a player into double figures, with swingman Garet Beal leading the Bears with nine points, while forward Till Gloger and guard Aaron Calixte added eight points apiece.
Maine slipped to 2-7 while BC improved to 4-6.
Guards Eli Carter and Jerome Robinson scored 16 points apiece and Boston College snapped a six-game losing streak in the non-conference rout of the Black Bears.
Carter, playing in his 100th college game (for three different schools), added nine assists, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal and the pair combined to go 12 of 23 from the floor, 6 of 11 from 3-point range for the Eagles, who handed the Black Bears (2-7) their fourth straight loss.
Forward A.J. Turner and guard Darryl Hicks added 11 points apiece. Turner also had six rebounds, Hicks had five assists, and center Dennis Clifford added 10 points and six rebounds as the Eagles never trailed.
BC, averaging just 65 points per game coming in, was 12 of 27 from 3-point range.
Both teams were guilty of 19 turnovers as BC defeated Maine for the 13th time in 14 all-time meetings.
Devine Eke contributed six points and seven rebounds for the Black Bears while Ilija Stojilkovic chipped in with five rebounds and five assists.
The Eagles jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the game’s first 5 minutes, 15 seconds, but the Black Bears battled back to cut BC’s lead to 27-24 with 4:23 remaining in the first half. The key surge started over a four-minute span when Maine outscored BC 9-2. Calixte sparked the surge with six points.
The Eagles responded by outscoring the Bears 17-5 to take a 44-29 lead at halftime.
The Black Bears return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fordham (N.Y.)
