TCU QB Boykin arrested, suspended
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested and accused of assaulting a patrol officer following a fight at Pat O’Brien’s in San Antonio early Thursday morning.
He was charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest and assaulting a public official, which a third-degree felony.
TCU suspended Boykin following the arrest in advance of the Alamo Bowl on Saturday.
Boykin posted an apology on his Twitter account Thursday night.
He tweeted: “Word can’t describe how sorry I am. I truly let down my family, teammates and the TCU and Fort Worth communities who have supported me so much. I have no excuses for my very poor decision, and I’m embarrassed about it.”
Boykin’s suspension is a major challenge for the Horned Frogs to lose the senior starting quarterback days before No. 11 TCU plays No. 15 Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.
Boykin’s tweeted continued: “My teammates are my brothers. There’s nothing I wanted to do more than play one last game with my family seniors.”
Separate NBC TV affiliates in Texas reported bar patrons recognized Boykin and began “trash talking.”
Boykin reportedly took a swing but he missed his target and struck a bar employee. Police apparently tried to intervene when Boykin hit an officer. Multiple officers threatened to taser Boykin before he finally subsided, NBC San Antonio reported.
Boykin finished 10th in Heisman Trophy balloting. He had 3,574 yards passing and 31 touchdowns.
Pitt’s Boyd to enter NFL Draft
Pitt junior wide receiver Tyler Boyd announced Friday that he will skip his senior season and enter the 2016 NFL Draft.
Boyd leaves Pitt with school records for career catches (254) and receiving yards (3,361). He is currently ranked as the No. 5 draft-eligible receiver in the 2016 class and projected as a top-50 pick by NFLDraftScout.com.
Although he didn’t surpass 1,000 yards in 2015 (the only season he failed to reach that benchmark), Boyd set a career best with 91 catches and added six touchdowns. With streaky quarterback play and running back James Conner sidelined for the 2015 season, the Pitt play-calling manufactured touches for Boyd, including handoffs and screens, as he was the team’s best playmaker on offense.
Despite playing with three different starting quarterbacks each of his three years with the Panthers, Boyd produced consistent numbers each season, breaking several school records in the process.
Titans’ Gurley likely out Sunday
St. Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley is a candidate for NFL Rookie of the Year, but it appears he won’t have the chance to add to his numbers in Sunday’s season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
Gurley didn’t practice this week because of a foot injury suffered late in last Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks, and his foot has been in a boot all week. Listed as doubtful but not out on the injury report, head coach Jeff Fisher said after practice Friday, “You can read between the lines there.”
While Fisher and the Rams are hoping to get to .500 with a win Sunday, they don’t believe it’s worth making the injury worse by playing him.
Fisher did say no surgery will be necessary just “a couple of weeks” of rest.
Gurley will finish the season with 1,108 yards rushing on 229 carries (4.8-yard average) and 10 touchdowns.
Bosa to enter NFL draft
Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa plans to enter the NFL draft, Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said.
Bosa, the No. 1 defensive player in the 2016 NFL Draft based on NFLDraftScout.com rankings, said earlier this week he would discuss his plans after the Fiesta Bowl game against Notre Dame.
NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Rob Rang has touted Bosa as the top defensive player in the draft all season.
Colts waive receiver
The Colts waived wide receiver Griff Whalen from the injured reserve list. He was placed on IR with broken ribs on Dec. 21, ending his season.
Whalen played in 14 games for the Colts this season and caught 19 passes for 205 yards and one touchdown. He also had 12 punt returns for 85 yards (7.1 average) and nine kickoff returns for 244 yards (27.1 average).
