GARDINER, Maine — State police believe a car crash that claimed the life of a local man occurred five days before a trooper discovered the car, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
Found dead in the car was Ian Carter, 27, McCausland said on Monday. Police believe the crash occurred on Dec. 28.
Carter’s car went off Interstate 295 and into the median, became airborne and struck a tree 25 feet off the ground, McCausland said. The car came to rest on a steep embankment, and was discovered Saturday by a southbound motorist who saw a reflection of Carter’s vehicle, McCausland said.
Carter was last seen leaving work in southern Maine on Monday and nobody reported him missing, McCausland said.
Police believe he was heading home, as the crash took place near the Route 201 exit ramp off the northbound lane.
