Bowdoin team receives national sportsmanship award

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team is one of eight schools across all divisions of intercollegiate competition to receive the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Platinum Award for Team Ethics and Sportsmanship.

Coach Brianne Weaver’s squad finished the 2015 season with zero red or yellow cards to achieve the honor, joining the women’s soccer teams from Columbia International University, Frostburg State University, Nazareth College, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Potsdam, St. John Fisher College, The College of Saint Rose and Wilson College.

Bowdoin finished with a record of 13-6-1 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Three bowlers advance to national tourney

AUGUSTA — Matthew Douglas of Bangor, Tyler Carr of Durham and Zachary Lessard of Greene qualified for the national Junior Gold Championships during the Maine State Junior Gold Bowlers fifth tourney of the season Saturday at Sparetime Recreation Center.

Douglas, who bowls out of the Family Fun Bowling Center in Bangor, rolled a 10-pin score of 914 for five games to earn the berth. Carr of Yankee Lanes in Brunswick recorded a 902 and Lessard of Sparetime Recreation in Lewiston had an 879.

Douglas was also the tourney’s winner in the under-age 20 division while Christopher Haney of Brewer and Family Fun captured the U15 title. Haney earned his title through head-to-head matches.

Bruins assign F Pastrnak to AHL

The Boston Bruins assigned forward David Pastrnak to the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League on Monday.

Pastrnak, 19, has appeared in 10 games with Boston this season, recording two goals, two assists and eight penalty minutes. He has skated in 56 games for the Bruins, totaling 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists).

Pastrnak has played in two games with Providence this season, with one point.

In December, Pastrnak was loaned to the Czech Republic’s World Juniors team. During the tournament, he played in four games, registering one goal and three assists.

Three NBA players fined

Detroit Pistons forward Marcus Morris has been fined $15,000 for shoving Indiana Pacers forward Paul George, the NBA announced Monday.

Kiki VanDeWeghe, the NBA’s executive vice president of basketball operations, also said George was fined $10,000 for contributing to the altercation.

George and Morris got into a shoving match as the game ended and had to be separated.

Milwaukee Bucks guard O.J. Mayo was fined $25,000 for aggressively pursuing a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner upon his ejection.

The incident occurred after Mayo was assessed his second technical foul of the game with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter of Milwaukee’s 95-85 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night at Target Center.

WR Treadwell headed for NFL

Ole Miss junior wide receiver Laquon Treadwell made it official on Monday, declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft. He leaves the Rebels with the school record for career receptions (202).

Treadwell is currently ranked as the No. 1 wide receiver prospect for the 2016 class and a projected top-10 pick overall by NFLDraftScout.com.

He had his best season as a junior in 2015, leading the SEC in receiving with 82 catches for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Notre Dame’s Russell to enter NFL draft

Notre Dame cornerback KeiVarae Russell has decided to enter the 2016 NFL Draft rather than petitioning the NCAA for another year of eligibility.

Russell is the 10th-rated draft-eligible cornerback and projected as a third-round pick by NFLDraftScout.com. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound Russell finished the 2015 season fourth on the Irish with 60 tackles, but missed the final two games with a broken right leg.

Russell is the fourth Notre Dame player to announce he will enter the draft, following wide receiver Will Filler, running back C.J. Prosise and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley.
