WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College women’s basketball team used an 11-0 scoring run to end the game and held Bates College without a point for the final 5:50 of the contest in a 64-58 victory in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Mules move to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. Bates is 3-8 and 0-1.
Desi Smith had 19 points, including an 8-for-11 effort from the foul line, for the Mules. Carylanne Wolfington added 17 points thanks to 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range and added six rebounds. Haley Driscoll added six points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Mia Diplock scored 12 points and had five steals. MaryKate Caverly had six points and a team-high four assists.
Chelsea Nason had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats of Lewiston. All 10 of her rebounds came on the defensive end and she dished five assists. Lyse Henshaw finished with 13 points, while Bernadette Connors and Nina Davenport both had eight points. Allie Coppola had six points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
UMF 61, Johnson St. 54
At Farmington, the UMaine-Farmington Beavers used a 12-4 scoring surge in the fourth quarter and hit clutch free throws in the final minute to earn the North Atlantic Conference win over Johnson State.
Meghan Smith turned in a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMF (5-5 overall, 4-1 NAC). Kelly Pomerleau chipped in with a solid outing with 14 points, four rebounds assists while Cheyenne Malloy added nine points.
Domonique Carter-Stanley paced the Badgers (5-7, 2-3) with 18 points and five rebounds and Ashley Goddard added 11 points and six rebounds.
Lyndon 55, Thomas 47
At Waterville, Mikayla Hodge recorded 18 points and 18 rebounds to power Lyndon State (Vermont) by the Terriers.
Lyndon State outrebounded Thomas 52-34.
Allison Brown chipped in with 10 points for Lyndon State (3-7, 2-3 NAC) while Abby Salvadore added eight points and eight rebounds.
Katie McAllister scored 14 points to lead Thomas (2-9, 1-4). Jordan Agger-Barnes added 11 points and Ashleigh Gagne had eight.
Men’s Basketball
UMFK 71, Carlow 59
At Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, sophomore Jake Rioux hit six 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 26 points in UMaine-Fort Kent’s victory.
UMFK trailed 56-55 with 5:15 remaining but ended the game on a 16-3 run to beat Carlow University.
Rioux hit the game-turning 3-point shot as the shot clock expired with 4:47 remaining to put the Bengals up two. UMFK out rebounded Carlow 51-39, including 16 offensive rebounds.
UMFK’s Joe McCloskey had 26 points, Marquis Glenn had 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Niko Vukosavovic, Benson Arogbo and Rosevelt Smith Jr. each had 8 rebounds.
Carlow was led by Zack Taylor’s 14 points, including three 3-pointers. PJ McLaughlin had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Bates 73, Colby 69
At Lewiston, Josh Britten and Shawn Strickland combined for 32 points on 10-for-16 shooting from 3-point territory to lead Bates by Colby in Alumni Gymnasium, ending the visiting Mules’ winning streak at 10 games.
Colby (10-2, 0-1 NESCAC) lost for the first time since its season opener against Staten Island. One of the Mules’ 10 wins was an overtime victory over Bates in Waterville on Dec. 12.
Bates (8-5, 1-0 NESCAC) won its fourth straight game.
Britten scored a career-high 18 points on 6-11 shooting from beyond the arc, and he came up with numerous big defensive plays, collecting three blocked shots and two steals. Strickland added 14 points, including 4-5 shooting from three, along with three assists.
Strickland’s high-arcing three from the top of the circle with 19 seconds left in regulation dropped cleanly through the net to make it a two-possession game.
Mike Newton had 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Bates, Mike Boornazian pitched in 10 points with five assists and six rebounds.
Luke Westman shot 7-for-7 from the field for a team-high 14 points to go with three assists for Colby. Sam Willson added 12 points and Patrick Stewart had a team-high nine rebounds in addition to 10 points.
Tufts 102, Bowdoin 69
At Medford, Massachusetts, the Tufts men’s basketball team built a 38 point halftime lead over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears on their way to a 102-69 NESCAC win at Cousens Gym Friday night. Sophomore Vincent Pace led the Jumbos with 25 points, including a 5-for-6 mark from downtown on the evening.
The Jumbos, who were 17-for-34 from behind the three-point line on the evening, move to 10-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. The setback brings the Polar Bears record to 7-4 overall with a 0-1 mark in conference play.
Jake Donnelly was the leading point scorer for the Polar Bears, who finished the contest shooting just 35.9 percent, as he had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Lucas Hausman turned in 11 points and both Liam Farley and Jack Simonds both finished with nine. Farley and Matt Paleki collected six rebounds each.
Thomas 81, Lyndon State 62
At Waterville, senior Levi Barnes scored a game-high 31 points, including his career 1,500th point, to lead Thomas by Lyndon State in North Atlantic Conference action.
Barnes reached the 1,500 mark with a jumper at the 14:39 mark of the first half, eventually pushing his total to 1,525 points. Barnes jumped from ninth place on Thomas’ all-time scoring list past Mike Adams (1,521 points, 1990-94) and into a tie with Chris Blodgett (1978-82) for seventh place all-time. Just ahead of Barnes on the list is former teammate Jarrad DeVaughn (2009-13) at 1,575 points.
Barnes finished the game 10-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from long distance. He also sank all seven of his free throw attempts and pulled down five rebounds. Tyheem Simon tallied 16 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting from the field with three steals, an assist and a rebound. Carlos Gonzalez flirted with another double-double, finishing with 11 points and seven boards.
