BANGOR, Maine — A trio of Bangor bridges are scheduled to get facelifts in late spring or early summer that may require overnight closures.
The Maine Department of Transportation will be working on the Washington Street bridge, which crosses the Kenduskeag Stream near Penobscot Plaza; Harlow Street Bridge, which crosses the Kenduskeag connecting Harlow Street and Valley Avenue; and the Penobscot River Bridge, which connects Brewer with Oak Street in Bangor, according to City Engineer John Theriault.
Theriault updated the city’s infrastructure committee on the plans during a meeting Monday night. No dates have been set.
He said all the work should be completed at night. In order to do that, crews likely will have to close the bridges from 7 p.m to 7 a.m. Pedestrians will be able to cross, but vehicles will not.
Ted Talbot, spokesman for MDOT, said $470,000 has been budgeted for painting and maintenance on the Harlow Street bridge, $130,000 for the Washington Street bridge and $100,000 for the Penobscot bridge. All those projects appear in MDOT’s 2016-2018 work plan.
Work will involve milling off the existing pavement and laying down new pavement. The Washington Street bridge also will get a new waterproofing membrane underneath the pavement.
Each bridge is expected to only require a couple of nights to complete.
MDOT has said it plans to work with officials in Bangor and Brewer to ensure the bridge projects don’t interfere with any summer events that would bring in a lot of traffic.
