BRIDGEWATER, Maine — Black ice and traveling speed that was too fast for road conditions were cited as factors in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning that injured four people, Maine State Police Sgt. Joshua Haines said in a news release.
Dorothy Holyoke‐Cosme, 55, of Houlton and her family were traveling north on Route 1 when her 1998 Nissan Sentra hit black ice, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.
Holyoke-Cosme’s car then crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Silverado towing a snowmobile trailer driven by James Small, 51, of Leicester, Massachusetts, Haines said.
Holyoke‐Cosme had to be extricated from her wrecked vehicle by the Bridgewater and Mars Hill fire departments. Holyoke‐Cosme, her husband, Manuel Cosme, and two grandchildren, ages 13 and 10, were taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Haines said.
Holyoke‐Cosme’s vehicle was demolished as was Small’s snowmobile trailer. Small’s pickup also had extensive damage.
