TREMONT, Maine — Four people at a house in the local village of Bass Harbor were given official warnings Friday after they alarmed neighbors by discharging a firearm loaded with blanks, according to Maine State Police.
The incident occurred about midnight Friday at a house on Bass Harbor Woods Road, Trooper Chris Smith of Maine State Police said. A neighbor heard several shots fired from the nearby house and called police, he said.
Maine State Police called for backup from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department before going to the house where the shots had been fired, Smith said.
The shooting had stopped by the time police arrived, the trooper said. The two men and two women in the house were cooperative and told police that the firearm was loaded with blanks. Even though the shots were loud, no bullets were actually fired, they told police.
Smith said that all four people at the house had been drinking alcohol before discharging the weapon. Police inspected the gun and verified it had been loaded with blanks when fired, he said.
All four people were warned for disorderly conduct, according to Smith.
The trooper said the neighbors reacted appropriately by becoming alarmed about the gun being discharged in the residential neighborhood.
“They certainly did the right thing,” Smith said. “Shooting blanks at midnight was inappropriate. Alcohol and firearms don’t make for a good mix.”
