BANGOR, Maine — A Winter Harbor woman will be on probation for the next three years on a theft charge, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Sandra Melnick, 53, was ordered to pay the U.S. Postal Service $1,629.55 in restitution after she was sentenced in U.S. District Court Wednesday.
Melnick had pled guilty to the charge of theft of public money in August 2015.
From May to September 2014, Melnick had issued a series of money orders without reporting the sale or tendering the money to the postal service while serving as a postmaster relief in Sullivan.
Many of the money orders were cashed by recipients before they were reported as sold.
When postal service investigators audited Melnick’s accounts, three previously cashed money orders that she had not reported being sold were discovered.
