PORTLAND, Maine — A teenager accused of shooting a 47-year-old man in Scarborough appeared in court on Monday.
Police say the 17-year-old boy broke into a home and shot Bruce Glidden while he slept.
Defense attorney Ed Chester entered a denial plea on behalf of the teen, which in juvenile court is the equivalent of not guilty.
However, prosecutors told the judge they anticipate more charges against the teen.
The 17-year-old senior from Scarborough High School is accused of breaking into the home of Bruce and Amy Glidden while they and their two teenage children were sleeping, and shooting and wounding Bruce Glidden.
Because the case is in juvenile court, CBS 13 will not release the name of the accused, but a CBS 13 reporter did speak with an attorney for the teen’s parents, who also will not be identified.
“This is a tragedy for everyone involved. The Gliddens have been a victim of a crime. And the [accused’s family] have had their 17-year-old son, who was inducted into the Scarborough High School National Honor Society recently, accused of a heinous crime. It’s the parent’s worst nightmare,” Dan Warren, attorney for teen’s parents, said.
Warren says the family is investigating all the facts and evidence in the case. He says the irrational act the teen is accused of doesn’t fit the type of young man he is. Warren says he is a student athlete with no criminal record.
“Their son is not a common criminal. He’s never been in trouble for any reason,” Warren said.
Warren says the teen knew the Gliddens’ son and daughter, but isn’t sure if he knew Bruce Glidden.
Scarborough police arrested the teen early Friday morning after receiving a call of a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of a home on Pleasant Hill Road. Police found a gun in the car and arrested him.
Investigators haven’t said anything about a motive in the case. The teen will remain at the Longcreek Juvenile Center.
“He’s doing pretty well holding up at the Longcreek facility. He’s been trying to stay busy and trying to be involved in different activities over there,” Warren said.
Juvenile prosecutors have filed requests for a psychological evaluation of the teen.
They’ve also requested a forensic evaluation, but it is not known what that is for.
Scarborough High School is referring all calls to Scarborough police.
