BELMONT, Maine — A man who allegedly knocked out his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend with a blow from a flashlight Monday afternoon has been arrested and charged in connection with the reported assault.
Christopher Whitcomb, 39, of Belmont was at a Lincolnville Road home with his ex-girlfriend when an argument began, Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton wrote in a news release issued Tuesday morning. Witnesses in the home told police Whitcomb got upset and used a flashlight to hit the other man in the head, causing him to pass out.
However, the alleged victim awoke and fled the residence before the police arrived because he had bail conditions that restricted him from being there, Trafton wrote. Deputy Merl Reed and his police dog, Frankie, were called to track the man, who had run into the woods, according to the news release.
“The deputies were concerned for the victim’s safety considering he had sustained what appeared to be a significant head injury,” Trafton wrote.
Police tracked the injured man for about 2 miles and found him at another home, the sheriff wrote. He was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital to be treated for a significant laceration on his head. He is expected to be charged in connection with the bail violation at a later time, according to Trafton.
Whitcomb was arrested and charged with class B aggravated assault and taken to the Waldo County Correctional Center, where he was being held without bail, according to Trafton.
