Wizards’ Beal suffers concussion

Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal was diagnosed with a broken nose and concussion that sidelined him for Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

The Wizards said Beal’s status is day to day. According to the NBA’s concussion policy, he must complete the Return to Participation Exertion Protocol before he’s cleared to play again.

Beal was injured during the second quarter of Monday night’s 116-91 loss to Boston while guarding Celtics guard Marcus Smart, whose forearm struck Beal in the face. He left the court with four points and blood pouring from his nose.

Ducks’ Horcoff suspended 20 games

The NHL suspended Anaheim Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff for 20 games without pay on Tuesday for a violation of the league’s performance enhancing substances program.

The league made the announcement on Tuesday and offered no additional comment. The suspension will cost Horcoff $357,526 based on his annual salary of $1.75 million. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension means Horcoff receives a mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and potential treatment.

In 45 games for the Ducks this season, the 37-year-old Horcoff has six goals, four assists and 30 penalty minutes. The 37-year-old was drafted by Edmonton in 1998 and spent 12 of his 16 years in the NHL with the Oilers, scoring 447 of his 506 career points for the team.

Troubled Missouri QB Mauk suspended

Trouble found Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk again, and he could be out of chances with the Tigers.

Mauk was suspended indefinitely, his third ban in four months, after a video emerged purporting to show him snorting a line of cocaine. The video released Monday night shows a man resembling Mauk snorting a powdery substance.

Missouri officials released a statement and said they are still attempting to confirm elements of the video.

“We are currently gathering information regarding the video in question,” the statement read. “This is an issue we take very seriously and one that will not be tolerated within our program. We will take the appropriate actions once we have all the facts. In the interim, Maty Mauk has been indefinitely suspended for the Mizzou football program.”

A Missouri player who asked not to be identified by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch claimed the video might be as much as two years old.

Future cloudy for Lions’ Johnson

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson remains undecided on his future, his agent said.

After the 2015 season, Johnson told several teammates that he was considering retirement because of football’s physical demands on his body. He has battled through ankle, finger and knee injuries the past few seasons.

Agent Bus Cook said there’s no timeline for Johnson to make a decision.
