ROCKLAND, Maine — The city has contracted with a private trash hauler to bring the community’s solid waste to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co.’s incinerator in Orrington following a crash last month that destroyed the city-owned tractor-trailer.

The city’s 1999 tractor-trailer truck was heading north on Route 1 in Northport near the entrance to Point Lookout at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 10 when a 2008 Loomis Fargo armored truck was slowing and turning left, according a Maine State Police accident report.

The driver of the city truck — John M. Temple, 49, of Warren — reported he failed to see, in time, the armored truck turning and was unable to stop before striking the rear of the Loomis Fargo vehicle, according to the accident report.

The city truck was destroyed as was the armored truck.

Temple was not injured. The driver of the armored truck — Erik B. Candage, 27, of Levant — complained of pain to the head but did not require going to the hospital. The other member of the armored truck crew — Andrew J. Farrar, 33, also did not require going to the hospital.

The city truck was transporting trash to PERC at the time of the crash. Another truck was called to transport the trash to the PERC incinerator.

City Manager James Chaousis said the city is considering what to do long term for transporting the city’s trash. The city has contracted on the short term with contractor Justin Long.

The police report does not cite any ticket being issued in the crash.
