BANGOR, Maine — The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for coastal Washington and Hancock counties late Wednesday through early Thursday.
Beginning around 4 p.m. Wednesday, winds of 30 to 45 mph — with gusts as high as 60 mph — are expected, forecasters in the weather service’s Caribou office said. Winds are expected to subside by about 4 a.m. Thursday.
Cities and towns likely to be affected include Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Blue Hill, Eastport, Machias and Cherryfield, the weather service said. Winds will be strongest on the immediate coastline.
A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
Winds that high can cause tree limbs to snap. Scattered power outages also are possible. Motorists can expect difficulty driving high-profile vehicles.
