DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — A Bangor man will serve 30 days in jail and two years of probation and pay $8,905.60 in restitution for stealing a diamond engagement ring in Damariscotta in June 2015.
Rocky L. Grass, 32, pleaded guilty to class B theft by unauthorized taking or transfer on Jan. 19, according to court documents. He was sentenced to three years in prison with all but a 30-day jail sentence suspended, plus two years of probation.
His probation conditions prohibit contact with the Damariscotta homeowners and require restitution. If he violates probation, he could return to custody for as much as two years and 11 months, the suspended portion of his sentence.
Grass was working for a subcontractor at a Bristol Road home when he stole the diamond engagement ring, a wedding band, and other jewelry with a total value of about $10,000-$15,000 on June 10, 2015, according to police statements at the time.
He pawned the jewelry in Bangor for $230.
Grass was an employee of a Bangor-area subcontractor hired by a big-box home-improvement store to complete some work at the home, according to police.
Grass has prior convictions for theft by receiving stolen property and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, as well as obstructing government administration, trafficking in dangerous knives, and violating a protective order.
Damariscotta Police Officer Erick Halpin was the investigating officer.
