WINTERPORT, Maine — A mobile home off Route 139 was leveled by fire on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Winterport Fire Chief Tom Doe said crews were dispatched to the scene just west of the Streamside Golf Course shortly after noon, but the fire was going for about an hour before the first crew, a tanker from Monroe, arrived.

“It’s out of sight of the other residences up in there, it was going for up to an hour,” said Doe. “I’m not sure who saw it. I assume it was a neighbor.”

The residence is located about a mile up a private road off Route 139, Doe said.

Crews performed a defensive attack with the home fully engulfed in flames, Doe said. The homeowner had left to go and pick up his daughter, and nobody was home.

Doe said the damage is so severe that a cause will likely not be determined, but he believes an electric heater was the culprit.

No firefighters were injured, Doe said. He added the family does not have insurance but the Red Cross is rendering assistance.

Crews were at the scene for about three hours. Firefighters from Winterport, Monroe and Frankfort responded.
